ESL Initial Assessment

ESL: Initial Assessment (During the first two weeks)

  1. The ESL staff at the student’s school of attendance will:
    • review the results of the Home Language Survey;
    • review any school records and evidence of past schooling  that are available;
    • determine whether an ELP assessment is necessary;
    • determine if the student requires a placement in the ESL program based on the W-APT and the multiple criteria listed above;
    • consider the State’s ELP levels described within the PA ELPS standards when placing students in an instructional program for ELLs.
    • maintain all assessment results and anecdotal records in a portfolio for each student evaluated for a placement in the ESL program.
  2. The ESL and regular education staff and administration will communicate with the student’s parents using an interpreter as needed.
