Placement of English Language Learners

1.If the identified student is English proficient, the student will be placed in an appropriate regular education program. The school’s ESL staff will then monitor the student’s progress in the regular education program. If the student demonstrates difficulty in the regular education program, the ESL staff will conduct an assessment to determine whether the difficulty is language related and whether ESL services are required.

2. If the student is limited in English proficiency, the student will be placed in the English as a Second Language program (ESL), with instruction in the regular education program for all other subjects and activities. ELLs will be placed in an age-appropriate grade level, as well as can be determined. Regular education teachers, in conjunction with ESL staff, will develop accommodations in the regular education program for ELLs in order to help them to be successful.
