This landscaping course is designed for the individual who desires to plan their own design with the assistance of our expert instructor. There will be four indoor classes (3/1, 3/8, 3/15, and a wrap-up class on 4/19) to learn the basic concepts of planning an area and to view plant material in order to gain ideas for how you want to landscape your property. You will draw a sketch or bring photos of your property, then work on the plan that you hope to achieve. The other weeks, the class will make field trips to several homes of class participants where the instructor will give her suggestions on the best landscape solutions for each property.

One of the oldest and most delightfully-scented colonial herbs is Lavender. In class you will learn how to grow this plant and how to prune and harvest it. A well-tended plant will last for years. In addition to this, your instructor will discuss cooking with lavender and using it in craft projects. You will receive a live lavender plant and a small bag of dried lavender to take home.

The hurricanes and record rainfall of 2011 left many of us wondering how to best deal with rainwater runoff which has transformed many of our yards into virtual ponds and streams. This class will teach you about Rain Gardens - a popular trend in home gardening, as well as an environmentally-friendly approach to storm water management in your own backyard. Learn new gardening techniques and plant selections to help soak up much of that excess rainwater. And, it will look beautiful, as well!

PRUNING FOR SMARTIES

Hands on class to learn the proper pruning techniques for your garden. Even if you don’t do your own gardening, you should know what methods are correct. We hope to make you see pruning as an artistic and therapeutic activity rather than a chore. Bring gloves and pruners; dress for the outdoors. If you don’t have any pruners, we will offer a reasonable and serviceable pair for under $10 available at the class.
