10/9/2006: Celebrating National School Lunch Week with food that is good for you

Photograph of SASD Food Service Personnel National School Lunch Week will be celebrated in the Souderton Area School District from October 9 to 13 using the theme "Vote for School Lunch." Sally's Statesman Salad, Presidential Cheesy Pizza, Campaign Trail, and Congressional Chicken Nuggets will be among the large variety of menu options for students in both the elementary and secondary schools.

"Because childhood obesity is a real concern, Souderton Area School District has joined school districts across the country in adopting wellness policies that provide more healthy meals for children at school," said Mrs. Jane Natali, Supervisor of Food Service.

Pizza is made with multigrain dough. A minimum of five fruits and fresh vegetables are available everyday providing students more of a choice, that way they'll pick something they'll really eat. Soup, whole wheat bread or multigrain bread, fresh baby carrots, tossed salad, assorted juices, and fresh sliced apples are available daily along with skim and/or low fat milk. Nutrition experts want to show kids healthy foods can still taste good.

On Wednesday, October 11, everyone purchasing their lunch at SASD will receive a free fruit sundae for dessert. Toppings will include crushed pineapples, bananas, and strawberries.
