11/21/2006: Students Team Up for Community Day of Service
Eighty-six Souderton Area School District secondary students participated in a Community Day of Service, sponsored by the SASD and IV Chamber of Commerce performing a variety of voluntary services for local organizations.
Students from Indian Valley Middle School, Indian Crest Junior High, and Souderton Area High School were joined by teachers and members of the business community as they provided manpower for special projects at the Indian Valley Opportunity Center, the Boys and Girls Club, Indian Valley Housing Corporation, Care N Share Thrift Shop, Indian Valley Public Library, Dock Woods Community, Souderton Area Senior Center, Souderton Mennonite Home, Adult Day Services, Bucher Park & Harleysville Community Center, IV YMCA, and Gruber & Kulp Road Park and Bike Trail.
The Community Day of Service was held on an early dismissal day on October 31st. After students attended morning classes, they gathered for a pizza lunch, were divided into teams of 10, and then spent the afternoon at their respective sites.
Students painted gift bags for approximately 1600 inmates at Graterford Correctional Facility which will be filled with items by Christopher Dock students. Students helped escort residents in wheel chairs to a Halloween party and parade, participated in song and dance, and provided cider and soft pretzels to the senior citizens. Additional service projects included sprucing up landscaping at several locations.
The Community Day of Service was organized by the Education Subcommittee of the Indian Valley Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the business education teachers at the three SASD secondary schools.
