New High School > Project History > January 2005 New High School Update
January was a busy month of progress for the New High School Project. So that all parties are up to speed, please review the information below.
Land Acquisition
The Board passed PlanCon C (Land Acquisition) and forwarded it to the State for review and approval. PDE sent formal approval of Souderton’s PlanCon C to the Superintendent on January 27th.
Schematic Design
The Board passed PlanCon B (Schematic Design) and forwarded it to the State Architect for review and approval. Mr. Silva, Mr. Varano, and Mr. Ackerman conducted an 80-minute Architectural Review with the State Architect’s Office on January 25th, 2005. The design and educational specifications received high marks from the State Architect, who confirmed the successful review with the Superintendent.
Design Development
The New High School Project entered a new phase of Design Development, or defining the interiors of the educational and support spaces contained in the schematic plan.
The Steering Committee and the Operations Committee of the Board reviewed the needs of the academic and athletic programs in terms of the natatorium, playing fields, and stadium. On January 27th, the Board voted 9-0 to authorize the inclusion of a multi-purpose stadium on the school site; additionally, the Board voted 7-2 to expand the size of the natatorium. The schematic plan will be adjusted accordingly.
Meanwhile, Mr. Silva, Mr. Varano, and Mr. Ackerman began meeting with department leaders and teachers from various departments (Science, Technology Education, Guidance, School Nurse, Music, Art, and Special Education) to begin the design of specialized rooms, labs, and offices. Mr. Ackerman collected information, photographs, and sketches from the departments to make a “first pass” at designing their facilities. Department meetings with the architect to share information, ideas, and suggestions will occur on a planned schedule throughout February, March, and April. Mr. Silva will present updates on design development at future Steering and Operations Committee meetings.
