Construction on Schedule!
Happy New Year! The construction phase of the New Souderton Area High School Project is moving forward on schedule and on budget. Because of cooperative weather and an average daily manpower of 165 workers on site, Phase Five of construction was completed in the fall of 2007. Phase Five included:
- Reconstructing Lower Road
- Constructing site entrances, installing entrance gates, paving campus roads and walkways
- Completing exterior brickwork/installing all school doors
- Constructing the stadium, grandstands, lighting system, artificial turf playing field, tennis courts
- Commencing the construction of the mechanical and electrical systems within the building
Additionally, the Souderton Area School District's Board of School Directors approved contracts for the construction of stadium support buildings: a concessions stand/public toilets building, a team room building, and ticket booths. The additional structures will allow for the efficient operation of the stadium facility and adjacent athletic fields
As 2008 begins, the project is in Phase Six of Construction. Phase Six includes the installation of:
- Drywall throughout building hallways and classrooms
- Flooring
- Fire alarm and suppression devices
- Intercommunication wiring
- Sunlight harvesting system (adjusts classroom light settings to automatically incorporate natural light)
- Lockers throughout building
- Electrical panels
- Ceiling grids and light fixtures
- Bathroom and plumbing fixtures
- Cabinetry and casework in classrooms
Phase Six will continue into the Spring.
Phase Seven will be the 12-month period between April 2008 and March 2009 that will largely complete all installations, painting and landscaping, and provide substantial completion of all prime contracts. The SASD will use the spring and summer of 2009 for "the big move in" of people, supplies, furniture and equipment into the new school. The New Souderton Area High School will open for students in September 2009 for the 2009-2010 school year.
What About the Old High School?
The existing high is for sale! The Souderton Area School District has employed the services of a global real estate firm, Binswanger, who specializes in the advertising and sale of large properties. Check out the listing for the existing high school property at www.binswanger.com.
The sale will result in possession by the new owner only after all students are moved to the new building in September 2009. Also, the SASD has contracted with the firm, Schultz & Williams Inc., a national consulting and direct response firm that helps nonprofits raise funds, build resources and realize community and business support. The SASD continues to reach out into the community for sponsorships and naming rights for parts of the new Souderton Area High School.
