ESL: Placement of Limited English Proficient (LEP) Students

If the identified student is English proficient, the student will be placed in an appropriate regular education program. The school’s ESL staff will then monitor the student’s progress in the regular education program. If and when the student evidences difficulty in the regular education program, the ESL staff will conduct an assessment to determine if the difficulty is language related, and if ESL services are required.

If the student is limited English proficient, the student will be placed in the alternative English language program (ESL) for instruction, with instruction in the regular education program for all other subjects and activities. LEP students will be placed in an age-appropriate grade level, as well as can be determined. Regular education teachers, in conjunction with ESL staff, will develop accommodations in the regular education program for LEP students in order to help them to be successful in the regular education program. A Pass/Fail system of grading will be used for LEP students, as appropriate, until such time as they prove to be capable of functioning successfully in the regular education program.
