Food Services: - WISE SNAC - Building a Healthier SASD

WISE SNAC is the Wellness Initiative for the School Environment: Smart Nutrition and Activity Collaborative. The goal of WISE SNAC is to promote healthy eating and physical activity through:

  • Delivering consistent educational messages and activities in the school, home and community.
  • Encouraging school-community partnerships.

With a grant from the North Penn Community Health Foundation, the Health Promotion Council worked with Souderton Area and Wissahickon School Districts to develop WISE SNAC. Last year, WISE SNAC began with a needs assessment with help from SASD Administration, E. Merton Crouthamel and West Broad Street Elementary Schools. This assessment gathered information on knowledge and beliefs about nutrition and physical activity from school administration, school faculty, students, families and community members.

This year, WISE SNAC will reach all of the elementary schools in the Souderton Area School District. You will see the "Monthly Messages" about nutrition and physical activity in newsletters, on the back of the lunch menu and on the district Web site. These messages are based on ideas from faculty, families, students and administration, collected during the WISE SNAC needs assessment.

In addition, WISE SNAC will train school faculty, connect community partners with the schools, and help support the BMI screening program and the district's Local Wellness Policy with resources to promote school health.
