Students > Academics > Program of Studies (Course Offerings) > Course Selection Process
Classes of 2012-2014
-
To begin the course selection process, students should analyze the appropriateness of their present academic program, their standing towards graduation, and the academic requirements consistent within their post-high school goals.
-
Near the end of the First Semester of each school year, counselors will meet individually with students and review program offerings for the coming school year. Students’ course requests will be posted shortly after they are made on Home Access Center (HAC) for parent/guardian and student review.
-
During the initial counselor meetings each student completes a course selection worksheet. Please remember that the use of school facilities and staffing needs are based on the courses selected during the course selection process.
-
Scheduling Limitations: The high school daily schedule consists of four daily 90-minute periods each semester, for a total of eight periods. Students are encouraged to schedule all academic periods. Many courses require specific prerequisites. Students should determine whether they meet the prerequisites of a given course before electing it by referring to the course descriptions. Additionally, students should consult with teachers, counselors, and their parent(s)/guardian(s) prior to selecting an appropriate program of studies. The number of students electing a course and the availability of teachers will determine whether or not a course will be taught.
-
Scheduling: Students are requested to be careful and thorough in their selection of courses. All students are expected to continue in, and complete, the courses selected. Adequate schedule planning for students, teachers, and classroom space can be completed only when school officials can consider student schedule requests to be final and binding.
- Request Changes: Students currently in grades 8 through 11 will receive copies of their schedules in May. It is our expectation that students will check, verify, and if need be, make a request to adjust their schedule within the first ten (10) days after receiving their schedule. Students should be especially alert to the proper placement of core subjects in their schedules. When possible, core subjects should be divided between the two semesters. Counselors will schedule appointments with students who make a request to adjust their schedules prior to the end of the academic year.
Classes of 2015 and Beyond
-
The course selection process for 8th grade students begins with a parent presentation in January.
-
Shortly after the parent presentation, 8th grade teachers will facilitate students’ taking of the career interest inventory in Bridges, SAHS’s on-line Career Pathways planning and management program.
-
8th grade students will choose one of the four Career Pathways (does not need to be the occupation identified in the career interest inventory) and complete their 4-Year Plan in Bridges. Using their student’s password, parents/guardians will be able to monitor all of their student’s work in Bridges.
-
Using their 4-Year Plan as their guide, students will meet individually with counselors to complete their course selection worksheet for their 9th grade year. Students’ course requests will be posted shortly after they are made on Home Access Center (HAC) for parent/guardian and student review.
-
Master scheduling will begin after all 8th – 11th grade course requests have been entered.
-
Schedules will be distributed to students in May.
