SAHS Achievement: Earthwatch Student Challenge Awards Program
The goal of the summer program offered by Earthwatch is to "stimulate the minds of students interested in sciences by funding fellowships for students to participate in scientific research expeditions. Award recipients will work alongside professional scientists, interact with talented peers and mentors and discover how science and technology can advance our understanding of the world."
Approximately 700 high schools receive application forms from Earthwatch. Each school may nominate only 2 students. 76 students nationwide were selected this year to attend one of 6 summer programs.
Matt Peddie studied "Transient Phenomena in Astrophysics" for 2 weeks at Los Alamos, New Mexico National Laboratory. This is the same program that Derek Thompson attended in 2004. Peter Brice was selected to attend the same program in 2006. Courtney Melanson was selected to attend a whale research expedition in Queen Charlotte Sound, Canada.
