Update on School Masking Requirement - December 12, 2021

December 12, 2021

On Friday, December 10th, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court issued a ruling which invalidated the Acting Secretary of Health’s school masking order. The Court affirmed a previous Commonwealth Court decision that the Acting Secretary did not follow proper rule-making procedures when issuing the masking order.

The administration is awaiting additional information from the state and county health departments and consulting with the District Solicitor. It is important to know how this development will affect our local health procedures, including our Test to Stay program and quarantine requirements for exposed students and staff. Until such time, a mask order will remain in effect for SASD schools and activities.

Therefore, there are no changes at this time to the masking requirement for SASD students and staff. We will be gathering information over the next few days and hope to communicate a final determination quickly.
