Message from the Board President Regarding Masking Requirement

September 3rd, 2021

We know many in our school community are frustrated by the state reversing its stance on local control regarding masks. On August 26, the Souderton Area School Board voted 6-3 in favor of masks optional for our students and staff. On August 31, the PA Department of Health via the Governor issued a mask mandate to be effective September 7, 2021, which in turn overrides our vote.

We realize that some parents and guardians feel this order is the right thing to do, while others feel it is wrong. So much effort was put into the decision-making process only to have our community’s right to make it overridden. The time spent on this matter by all was significant and that could have been applied elsewhere had we known the state was going to order an indoor mask mandate.

We are closely monitoring the evolving mandates from Harrisburg and will continue to advocate for local control. We are not guaranteeing any outcome, but we will continue to do our research, speak with officials and investigate this matter further. We ask for your continued patience and flexibility as we work through these challenges.

We remain keenly focused on providing the highest-quality education to our students and look forward to their return after the four-day holiday weekend. I appreciate our parents and community members coming together, no matter their viewpoints, with respect and civility to make this school year a positive one for all our students.

Sincerely,
Ken R. Keith
