General Health Services

The School Health Program is authorized by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The school nurse carries out their regulations and mandates.

Each student is given a yearly health appraisal with height, weight check and a vision screening. Hearing screenings are done in kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th, and 11th grades. A Scoliosis Screening is given in the 7th grade. * A Tuberculin Test is requested of all students who are foreign born or have lived outside the United States.

All students are required to have physical exams in K or 1st grade, 6th and 11th. Dental examinations are also required for all students in K or 1st grade, 3rd, and 7th grades. Most parents prefer to have these exams completed by their own private health care providers. However, the school district does employ dentists and physicians to provide these exams in school for those who are not able to have them performed privately.

A growth and development program is offered in 5th and 6th grades as part of the health curriculum.

The most vital aspect of the school nurse's position is to provide for daily health care of the students in order to maximize their learning potential.
