Curriculum

Souderton Area School District’s curriculum provides the foundation for student learning. The District’s Core Curriculum is developed by teacher teams based on state standards. Core curriculum is revised regularly. New curriculum and curriculum updates are implemented through a process which includes review by the District’s Curriculum Council, followed by the Education-Personnel School Board Committee’s review, and concluding with School Board approval.

The district works to ensure that every student engages in a rigorous curriculum that is implemented consistently within and across all schools in the district.  The Standards Aligned System (SAS), developed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, is a comprehensive, researched-based resource to improve student achievement. SAS identifies six elements that impact student achievement and provide the basis for designing the rigor that is necessary: Standards, Assessments, Curriculum Framework, Instruction, Materials & Resources, and Safe and Supportive Schools.

Teachers, department coordinators, grade level curriculum representatives and building level administrators work collaboratively to discuss the SASD curricula at all levels, participate in a program evaluation, develop strong assessments that align to standards, and/or create new pathways for our students.  This work is critical to the success of our students and keeps us current with new research.

ELEMENTARY CURRICULUM

SECONDARY CURRICULUM

The Secondary curriculum consists of a team-based middle level program leading to preparation for both college and career through Career Pathways in grades nine through twelve. Each planned course in a subject area draws its content and skill focus from the Pennsylvania Core Standards, which may be found at www.pdesas.org*.

Middle LevelIndian Crest and Indian Valley Middle Schools are designed around a team learning environment in which groups of students are shared by teachers of core subjects in grade levels. The core subjects in grades six through eight are: English Language Arts (Reading and Writing), Math, Science, and Social Studies with the addition of World Language/STEM in eighth grade. The benefit of teaming is that teachers share the knowledge of individual students that enables them to meet students' unique needs. With teaming, the opportunity exists for teachers to meet, plan and deliver interdisciplinary units of instruction. Additionally, our middle schools offer courses in Health, Physical Education, Family and Consumer Science, Guidance, Library, Guidance, Technology Education, Art, Band, Chorus, and Orchestra. Every week students have an Advisory period to help them balance academic excellence with activities and discussions that promote their social and emotional development. The other four days a week students have a FOCUS block that offers students enrichment, engagement or intervention learning opportunities in response to their needs.

High School Pathways

Souderton Area High School has organized its curriculum around Career Pathways through core requirements and electives. The Career Pathways of Arts and Humanities, Health and Human Services, Industrial and Engineering Technologies, and Business and Communication Technologies are areas of focus that point the way to college and career preferences. While students may select a Pathway, no student is locked into that pathway or prohibited from making other course selections. In addition to academic course work, a fifth block meeting time occurs twice weekly where time is provided for both academic and social support. At the high school, instructors continually strive to challenge students to stretch their thinking and apply their learning to real world situations with lessons that engage and stretch students' thinking.

Souderton Area High School offers integrated, academic, and honors courses in Math and Science as well as academic and honors courses in English and Social Studies. Our honors/high challenge program includes a total of eighteen Advanced Placement courses. Additionally, elective courses in World Language, Visual Arts, Music, Family and Consumer Sciences, Business and Technology, and Wellness, provide a robust range of choices for credit toward the graduation requirement of 28-29 credits for the graduating class of 2015. For additional information on graduation requirements and the Pathway Diploma, please see SAHS Academics.

Finally, Souderton Area High School students have the opportunity to attend North Montco Technical Career Center, where they learn hands-on skills for the world of work. Through Montgomery County Community College, students may elect courses for dual enrollment and on-line courses.

For more information on course offerings and non-traditional course opportunities, please see the High School Program of Studies.
