Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)

MTSS is school-wide system of supports and is provided to all students. Since interventions are personalized by individual, students are grouped based on common areas of need to provide targeted support. Some students receive MTSS in the classroom with the classroom teacher; others receive support during a block of time where a student meets with a specialist or other support.

Assessment data is an integral part of MTSS in helping teachers and administrators identify areas of strength, areas of growth, and to monitor progress. SASD utilizes universal screening assessments for all students, such as the NWEA / MAP growth, MAP reading fluency, as well as curricular-based measures to help identify intervention needs and to flexibly group students to deliver instruction. Other tests, such as the PSSA and Keystone assessments are state required, but also aide in developing intervention plans. Above all, MTSS is a strategy and structure to meet each student where they are academically and behaviorally and to support them within the educational environment.

No. In addition to reading and math, MTSS also provides enrichment and support for social/emotional/behavioral needs. For example, during an MTSS period, some students may join a reading group, others may receive math instruction, some students may receive enrichment of the curriculum, and others may see a counselor.

No. MTSS is regular education and provided to all students, similar to all other school support. MTSS is intended to identify and address areas of need in a proactive manner, providing timely supports for all students.

Yes. Students with Individual Education Programs (IEPs), Gifted Individual Education Programs (GIEPs), or 504 Service Plans, as well as English Language Learner (ELL) students, also receive MTSS supports. For example, a student may need a GIEP for reading but not for math. That student, however, may benefit from more challenging extension activities in math during MTSS.
